The 'Wests Tigers SWSAS' Rugby League Squad is primarily for 15 year olds only with the objective of putting athletes into a position of achieving positions in the Harold Matthews competition.
This program is unique to the Academy in that it is operated in partnership with the local junior representative organisations within our Academy area, and is overseen by the NSW Rugby League Academy. NRL Club Wests Tigers have been the driving force behind establishing the SWSAS Rugby League program in the junior development pathway. The partners include Group 6 Junior Rugby League, Wests Junior Rugby League and the Wests Magpies Representative Rugby League.
The program runs from October through to March and contains a squad of around 23 athletes. The structure of this program is closely monitored by the NSWRL Academy and is designed to fit around what athletes are doing with their own clubs, not replace them.
Athletes take part in an open trial process conducted in August / September. Once inducted into the program athletes can count on participating in educational sessions like drugs in sport, nutrition, time management, competition focus and preparation and others. These accompany the important athlete testing modules and the regular training sessions which are very much skill based.
Athletes may participate in a weekend training camp early in the program and generally have taken part in a tour around the Canberra area to play other Academy squads. Additional opportunities sometimes arise where the squad is able to play sides on league grounds and really soak up the atmosphere of what big time football is all about.
