Academy Golf athletes development demonstrated

South West Sydney Academy of Sport golf program athletes continue to perform at a high level across the State, over 10 tough tournaments.

The Academy athletes showed off their talent to the rest of the region at the recent Macarthur Junior Masters competition. This annual tournament is a favourite for Academy athletes as players get the opportunity to compete against some of their 'own region's' best non-Academy athletes.

Academy sports program manager Sarah Shehata said, "Seven out of the ten golfers are Academy returning athletes and their improvement is undeniable. The success of these athletes can in part be directly credited to this years coaching staff Gavin Meredith and Steve Borton, from the Antill Park Country Golf Club.

"These coaches have a strong passion for junior development and are a great support network for the young golfers".

Gavin Meredith is the current Golf professional at the Antill Park Country Golf Club and has over 22 years' experience as both a tournament player and teaching golf at high standard facilities. Some of these facilities include the Narrabeen Golf Academy and New South Wales Golf Club, La Perouse.

This year's Academy program highlights include four athletes placing third in the team event at the ClubsNSW Academy Games and James Anderson taking home the event's NETT winner's medal.

"The standard of golf currently being played by Academy athletes is outstanding and this has been recently recognised with Wollondilly athlete Blake Borton being one of only thirty athletes selected to trial for the NSW Golf 'train on squad', which will see 12 athletes selected for the State team", Shehata said.

Nominations for the Academy's '2015/2016 Golf Program' will open late September 2015.
