Liverpool’s Performance Enrichment Program Builds Confidence and Character Beyond The GameWritten on the 29 July 2025 by Abby Wijesekera ![]()
Over two high energy days, the Liverpool Performance Enrichment Program gave young local Academy athletes more than just a physical challenge, it delivered lessons in resilience, character and what it truly takes to perform at the next level. Designed to support and elevate aspiring athletes and athletes from the South West Sydney Academy of Sport in their journey, the program encouraged participants to "feel comfortable with being uncomfortable in a familiar environment." From the very first session, the tone was set, with the running theme revolving around growth happening outside of your comfort zone. Day one launched with a dynamic Pilates session, where athletes were guided through a series of exercises focused on control, flexibility and strength, along with pre-habilitation movements to be utilised before training and competing. The goal was to lay a foundation for movement efficiency and injury prevention, setting the tone for the rest of the program. From there, attention turned inward with a powerful high-performance mindset session. Athletes were asked to reflect on what impressions they would like to leave on those watching their potential. The session focused on "what makes a high-performing athlete" and highlighted the growing priority placed on 'character over talent' by coaches and recruiters. Athletes left the session with a deeper understanding that discipline, attitude, and self-awareness are just as important as physical abilities. The first day continued with a movement breakdown for field sports, where injury prevention and safe biomechanics took centre stage. This was followed by a fast-paced and action-packed Flag Football clinic, delivered by Bring It On Sports. The session brought teamwork, strategy and quick-decision-making to the forefront, all while keeping things fun and inclusive. Day Two was all about speed, with Track Fitness Australia running a sprint clinic that fine-tuned form, improved acceleration, and enhanced explosive power. Athletes were pushed to find that next gear and understand how their technique impacts performance, a game-changer for those involved in fast-paced sports. After a well-earned break and lunch, generously provided by hosts Thomas Hassall Anglican College, athletes returned for what many described as the most eye-opening experience of the two days; the Wheelchair Basketball Clinic, led by Wheelchair Sport NSW and ACT. Athletes were given the opportunity to use sports wheelchairs and experienced first-hand the challenges and skills involved in the game. It was not just about learning a new sport, it was about perspective, inclusion and respect. From building physical strength and mental toughness to embracing discomfort and celebrating diversity, the Liverpool Performance Enrichment Program left a lasting impact on all who attended. The future of sport in Liverpool is looking bright.
