Program Summary

Program Season: September - February
Age Group: 13-18 Years of Age
Gender: Male and Female

Current Program Status: 2024-2025 Program underway

The South West Sydney Academy of Sport implements high performance programs for talented young athletes from South West Sydney across a number of sports.

The Academy implements a 3x3 Basketball performance pathway program as a licensed operator partnering with NBL 3x3Hustle, and is provided by high performance coaching staff, independently of a traditional 5v5 basketball program.

This program is targeted for athletes interested in gaining selection to future state and national high performance pathway 3x3 teams, with a focus on refining skill development and match play within the 3x3 brand of basketball throughout training and participation in identified 3x3 Hustle events.

Athletes competing in Association representative teams are also invited to nominate, as are athletes selected into the Academy's UAA Basketball program, BNSW DAP and SPP programs.

Program Objectives

Develop athletes to be competitive, with a fundamentally sound base.

Provide fundamental individual skill development and leadership sessions for athletes during traditional representative off-season programs, to participate within the NBL Hustle and FIBA 3x3 High Performance Pathways.

Compliment athletes participation within existing traditional local, representative and Academy basketball pathways.

Prepare athletes for 3x3 High Performance trials and pathway programs, such as the 3x3 Pro Hustle tours, CLB 3x3 Leagues or future National representation.

Athlete Benefits

The program provides access to pathway performance coaching, analysis of individual skill and development within a squad structure, sports science testing, and access to high performance strength and conditioning programs.

A large range of athlete appropriate education workshops such as sport psychology, nutrition, drugs in sport awareness, public speaking, resilience, media training, sports medicine and injury prevention are also undertaken as a part of the regular training program.

The South West Sydney Academy of Sport 3x3 Basketball program is conducted alongside, and mirrors traditional programs conducted by both the South West Sydney Academy of Sport and fellow Regional Academies, and as such is designed to introduce athletes to State and National high performance pathways. And include training in the 3x3 Style of Play along with technical and tactical skill development specific to FIBA 3x3 Basketball.

Key performance opportunities will be selected to best suit the current development level of athletes, and may include events such as Academy hosted invitational tournaments, the NSW Hustle State Qualifiers and/or Championships, and the 3x3 Hustle National Championships.

Training and Performance Opportunities

  • The Academy will conduct regular (Ideally Fortnightly) on-court training and education sessions that will include individual and squad based fundamental skill development training between September and February. A focus on team dynamics and tactical skill development will take place in the lead up to the 3x3 Hustle NSW State Qualifiers.

  • Additional Academy education sessions and off-court development may take place following the conclusion of the "program year", with the program formally concluding at the Annual Athlete Graduation and Sport Awards Dinner, generally held in late July. These sessions may take place alongside athletes within the UAA Basketball Program.

  • Regular training sessions will be aligned to avoid clashes with the representative training and competition schedules of those clubs within the South West Sydney Academy of Sport catchment area, as much as possible.

  • Athletes will be required to undertake a strength and conditioning program, including access to a supervised gym program throughout the period. These sessions may be conducted alongside athletes within the UAA Basketball Program.

  • The Academy intends to send age and gender appropriate team's to multiple 3x3 Hustle tournaments, namely the 3x3 Hustle NSW State Qualifiers.

  • Training sessions will take place at indoor basketball stadiums within the Academy catchment area throughout the program. A full training and performance schedule will be provided to successful athletes through the XPS Network online communication tool.
