Local Sports Academy Praises Big Boost for BMX

Written on the 24 January 2018 by SWSAS

The proposed redevelopment of the Kirkham Sports Precinct is set to provide a big boost to local BMX riders of all levels. Our local Macarthur BMX club has called Kirkham home for many years and has done a remarkable job promoting participation in this exciting sport.

Indeed, Macarthur BMX is one Australia's leading clubs and provides community-based sport for over 340 members and their families. It is proposed that the upgrade will include a new amenity building, a world class BMX race track, as well as a pump track and a jumps track.

The South West Sydney Academy of Sport (SWSAS) is the heart of junior development in our region and delivers performance-based scholarship programs to our regions emerging talent, including BMX.

It's sports program manager James Watson considers the proposed BMX development will provide a huge boost to the sport in general, and young riders who aspire to climb the performance ladder will have increased opportunity to succeed, directly due to the quality of local facilities on offer.

Watson said, the recently held NSW BMX championships at the Macarthur track resulted in local riders making the finals in the majority of divisions. He said, local participation is strong and junior talent is rich, and the combination of a first class facilitiy and proven performance programs will deliver the success that in turn will further develop the sport locally and nationally.

SWSAS continues to work closely with the Macarthur club and the on-track results have been very pleasing with all riders improving their personal best. The access to high level coaching, targeted athlete education, deliverable opportunities, plus quality mentoring and a strong focus on fun, seems to be a great mix for BMX performance improvement.

Watson concluded by saying, a World class facility in your own backyard will make the transition from recreational racer to elite athlete much more attainable. We are currently organising annual interstate trips to give our riders 'big track' experience.

The Academy squad recently travelled to the Sleeman Complex in Brisbane for a coaching camp on what is considered by most a World class track; in the future we will be hosting these high-performance camps locally.
